My interest in integrative-holistic psychiatry began in my last year of residency. I obtained my training in allopathic medicine, which emphasizes the diagnosis and treatment of disease by seeking out the symptoms and treating with a medication or procedure. This methodology can be extremely valuable, however this process rarely took into consideration the whole person. I felt it impossible to heal someone if only treating one symptom at a time. This was counterintuitive to me. I entered medical school to become a healer, and even though I was obtaining the details and information needed to understand the pathophysiology of the human body, I did not feel that the systemic/problem-focused approach was adequate for full healing and potential.
A great friend of mine introduced me to creative healing. Through him I learned alternative methods for treating affective disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) as well as focusing on maintaining health and happiness. As I learned new techniques and the importance of wholeness and healthy living I utilized these skills for myself. Living with mindfulness and believing that the body is a self-healer I found my own wellbeing; I lost over one hundred pounds, my anxiety was under control, and I felt connected to my whole self. I saw firsthand how holistic medicine and treatments could not only heal but also maintain a happy healthy life. Since this time I have incorporated these methods in the treatment plans of my patients.
I am passionate about working with people to reach their full potentials. I want to help others find their paths and reconnect to their mental health, physical health as well as spiritual health. This can be obtained by using an integrative approach; healing the mind through creative modalities, mindfulness techniques, walk and talk therapy (movement and exercise) in conjunction with other healing methods (acupuncture, yoga, essential oils, supplementation of natural elements, reiki, etc).
